Your Letters & Pictures

A reportage of Coach Deejae (Marin FC) from Sweden.

Greetings from Ånässkolan,

The boys were in bed early because we had a 5:45 wake-up and a 6:25 departure in order to catch the tram to our round of 64 match against IFK Mariestaad.

We arrived at our desired 6:45 am at Kortedala Torg Station for the 10 minute walk to Kortedavella. The pitch was in pristine condition and our warm-up was energetic despite the early kick-off. The Swedes showed up about 30 minutes prior to kickoff and looked the part of a squad that won their group.

The opening five minutes was intense, hard fought, big tackles and the speed of play was very fast. Their 1-4-4-2 was direct with your typical forward pass, back pass, forward pass patterns while they were going to be a formidable challenge in the air. The MarinFC boys went after them, however, and had several (10) chances in the first half but had a hard heating up the keeper's fingers.

We got a late corner and Alex Hart raced after the ball to take the kick. His
near post kick was miscleared and Wyatt raced to the rebound and smashed it in the mix right past the defenders and into the far post.

Kroners were flying from all the boys! It was halftime, MarinFC 1- IFK Mariestaad 0.

Halftime discussions were about getting our shots on frame and continuing to
pressure the Swedes. Whatever we said could be somewhat thrown out the window at the Swedish #13 who got a yellow card after our goal, got his second yellow card one minute into the second half after he tackled Sammy from behind as he tried to dummy a through ball down the wing. The Swedes were forced to play a 1-4-4-1 for the remaining 29 minutes. We went after them.

Six minutes later BDS found Liam Hughes who took a ball down the left flank, did a guy in the corner and served a low ball across the face of the goal and Sammy poked it in from inside the six yard box. 2-0 on 37:00. 8 minutes later Liam took a free kick from 25 yards in front of goal and bent it around the wall and into the upper corner.

On 50:00, Alex sent Chris Campbell down the left wing and he cut in behind the outside back and crushed a shot into the upper 'elbow' which is that net stay in the upper 90. A favorite goal rivaling Liam's free kick. Four minutes later Alex Hart took a forward pass on the right wing and cut into the box with a Roberto Carlos behind the leg cut and was taken down in the box. Alex had a rebound goal reversed three minutes earlier, so he stepped up and took the penalty. And made no mistake by placing it down the center passed the diving keeper.

MarinFC 5-IFK Mariestad 0.

The scoreline looks big, but this was the best team we played in Gothia Cup. Their spirits were down after having a man sent off, but they never gave up. Our boys played their best match yet!

The round of 32 is in two hours. We leave in 30 minutes. Let's Go Marin.
