ALAN BALL MBE 1945 – 2007

The whole of football was shocked to learn yesterday of the sudden death of Alan Ball.

The youngest member of England’s World Cup Winning team Alan was renowned for his passion and enthusiasm for the game. His heroic performance in the Final of 1966 will never be forgotten by any of the England supporters fortunate enough to have witnessed it.

Alan gained 72 full international caps for England. He captained his country and a more patriotic player and supporter of the England team it would be difficult to find.

Alan began his playing career at Blackpool signing professional in 1962. Everton paid a record transfer fee to sign him from Blackpool in August 1966 and in five and a half seasons there he made over 200 appearances winning a League Championship medal in 1970. Arsenal paid another record transfer fee to take him to Highbury in 1971 where he played for the next five years before moving to Southampton helping to steer the Club back into the First Division in 1978. Alan ended his playing career at Bristol Rovers after second spells with Blackpool (as player/manager) and Southampton and short periods playing abroad.

His direct involvement in the game continued with coaching and managerial positions at Portsmouth (twice), Colchester United Stoke City, Exeter City, Southampton and Manchester City.

Altogether Alan made well over 700 Football League appearances with a goal per game ratio of just over one in four. As a player he was utterly dedicated and inspiring and his love for the game never wavered.

In memory of his service to the game all Clubs in the Premier League are prior to their games this week-end requested to stage a period of applause in celebration of his life and arrange for players to wear black arm-bands as a mark of respect.

Clubs in the Football League will be doing likewise.

Yours sincerely
