I don't think it is lack of civilization in your Italy by Charlie

Thanks Coach.

But I don't think it is lack of civilization in your Italy that leads to the hooliganism. I think it is the lack of will on the part of the authorities to stop the violence. As I'm sure you well know, England had the same kinds of problems for years, and finally a couple of truly terrible incidents, with many more deaths than one, got them to change things:

all seater stadiums, lots of police presence, careful screening of everyone
entering the stadium, and many other things including enormous
involvement by the police who can dictate the time of games so as to avoid problems and make them easier to police.

I have had the opportunity to travel to England a couple of times to
see Premier League matches. When I mention this to American friends they
ALWAYS ask, "Weren't you afraid." And in England, at matches, I have never felt safer.

For example, while watching Italy play Russia in the Euro '96 at Anfield, an
Englishman and a Russian starting yelling at each other near where I
sat, and the Russian got up and moved toward the Englishman. Before you could blink three or four Bobbies descended on both fans and carted them off
unceremoniously. They never returned!

I've watched many matches in Italy on t.v. and been astounded at what
the fans are ALLOWED to do: throwing things onto the pitch, lighting lots of
flairs and even shooting cannons, etc. I've never understood why this was allowed to happen.

In short, I don't think it is Italian Civilization that is the culprit, it is
the clubs and the rulers of the game who are at fault. Let us hope that
they, and the police, get together and make certain that this violence and
bad behavior is no longer possible. After all, I'll be going to your
wonderful country soon and would like to attend a match with my fiancee.

It's quite easyin England, France and Spain for women and children to attend. I hope it becomes so in Italy. In addition, it may boost attendance.
