Your Letters & Pictures
An open letter from a soccer lover.
I applaud your article in the August issue of Soccer California! One local coach here has suggested pushing players too hard, doing too many games, especially doing too many tournaments with little rest between games, gets the player far more knee operations than scholarships. It is, as you state, child abuse.
A related issue, perhaps the other side of the same coin, is putting players into very competitive programs and games at much too early an age.
It is the same syndrome; pushing too hard and too early.
A common result seems to be that many of the best U8 players are no longer playing competitive at U16 or U19. But many coaches and
parents do not figure this out until their kids finally quit soccer forever.
